ZAGREB, April 21 (Hina) - The 60th anniversary of the break-out of prisoners from the WWII concentration camp at Jasenovac, 100 km southeast of Zagreb, will be marked on Sunday at the Jasenovac Memorial Area, when homage will be paid to all victims and survivors, the chairwoman of the memorial area's governing council, Natasa Matausic, told the press on Thursday.

The commemoration of the 22 April 1945 break-out will be addressed by Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, Jasenovac Memorial Area manager Natasa Jovicic, surviving inmate Pava Molnar, and the president of the memorial area's council, Slavko Goldstein.

A prayer will be said for the camp's Catholic, Orthodox and Islamic victims, but not for the Jewish victims because of the Jewish holiday Pesah, Goldstein said, adding that the chief rabbi in Croatia, Kotel Da-Don, would come subsequently.

Wreaths will be laid by representatives of the surviving inmates from Croatia, Bosnia's Croat-Muslim entity, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro, the Croatian government, the Croatian president, the Croatian Armed Forces General Staff, the antifascist alliance, political parties, and others.

Goldstein commented on last weekend's commemoration of the Jasenovac victims in Donja Gradina, Bosnia's Serb entity. He said the commemoration was held appropriately despite some inappropriate statements.

"Some speeches mentioned Serb, Roma and Jewish victims, but not Croatian victims, unless as antifascists," said Goldstein.

He added it could also be heard in a specific political context that 700,000 people had been killed at Jasenovac, a claim he said Republika Srpska President Dragan Cavic repeated in the Krajiske Vijesti newspaper.

"We strongly refute that," Goldstein said, adding that Cavic's interview was replete with unfounded statements and that it showed Cavic was totally unfamiliar with the issue.

Goldstein said the commemoration at Donja Gradina had been manipulated for political purposes, although most of those attending had come to pay homage to the victims.

"Therefore, we decided to publicly respond given that the exact number of the Jasenovac camp victims has not been established yet."

He said the Jasenovac Museum had in its display a list with the names of 59,188 victims, and that the real number of victims was estimated at between 80,000 and 100,000.

Goldstein said the Jasenovac Memorial Area was continuing to collect data on the former camp's victims, but added it was unlikely the exact number would ever be known.
