Ambassador Butler has gained extensive political experience by working in Southeast Europe for years, the office said in a press release.
Butler served as United States ambassador to Macedonia from April 2002. Prior to that he served in diplomatic missions in Sofia and Belgrade, where he worked on negotiations which led to the signing of the Dayton peace agreement in 1995. In 1993 Butler was in the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe mission to Kosovo.
Butler will replace Donald Hays, who left his post in Bosnia earlier this month after three years of service.
