During his sermon Bozanic said, among other things, that today the presence of righteous persons was deliberately being ignored and neglected.
He added that figures about numerous Croatian Defence War veterans who committed suicide should be a strong signal to the society to consider its values.
"The veterans were the first to recognise the values for which they had to fight in times when there were threatening plans about the trampling of human and national dignity. With their care for others they showed how much love there was in their honourable defence of the innocent, and then many of them encountered an incomprehensible change of values," the cardinal said.
"Is it possible that the purpose of their sacrifice is being questioned?," Bozanic wondered, adding that the veterans should not lose the strength of their hope and patience.
He added that "we should not give up promoting the truth about us and the Homeland Defence War," and that in this process "we must use all possible means and institutions in the country and abroad".
He also stressed that Croatians should not allow the discrimination of the recent past.
The primate of the Croatian church asked the authorities "to clarify all the outstanding issues and that everybody should assume their share of responsibility". He also urged putting an end to attempts to manipulate the public "through half-truths and the accentuation of irrelevant details".
