ZAGREB, March 9 (Hina) - In the last month of tracking down Ante Gotovina, the fugitive general wanted by the Hague war crimes tribunal, and his potential helpers, the Croatian police checked more than 2,000 persons and facilities, nearly 65,000 vehicles, 3,000 ships and about 23,000 people on the border, the Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.

"A whole range of concrete political operations has been undertaken over the past month and the search has been intensified, as seen in the aforementioned figures. However, nothing has given results yet," spokesman Zlatko Mehun told Hina.

International cooperation has also been stepped up via Interpol and contact with police liaison officers at embassies in Croatia, sources at the ministry said.

They recalled that in early February the Police Directorate sent another instruction to all police departments to step up the search for Gotovina, while in late February all department chiefs were asked to invest additional effort.

"In view of finding Gotovina, the Interior Ministry, the intelligence community and the State Prosecutor's Office over the last four years collected a huge variety of data and information about his possible movements. Every piece of information was checked, but there have been no results so far," said Mehun.
