Jakovcic, who is the temporary president of the Adriatic Council, said this body would hold its first session in the northern Adriatic city of Pula on April 22. He also announced that Mesic and Sanader would attend the first session of the Adriatic Euroregion Standing Council in Venice.
The Adriatic Euroregion comprises Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, and Albania. Its goal is the protection of the Adriatic from all sources of pollution on land and sea for the purpose of economic development and progress, Jakovcic said, adding he had proposed Pula for the project's base.
He also said he would request the removal of bombs NATO allegedly deposited in the Adriatic during its intervention in Serbia and Montenegro in 1999 because nobody had refuted those allegations.
Jakovcic dismissed speculation that NATO plans to transfer its air base from Aviano, Italy, to Pula, saying there was no official intention by NATO to do so as far as he knew.
He said Istria could not have a military base because the county was preparing the Brijuni-Riviera project for foreign and domestic investors, intended to make the peninsula a world famous tourist destination.
Jakovcic said county authorities would propose Udbina for the location of an air base.
