The establishment of the independent Croatian state in 1991 marked the start of transition from the Socialist system of statistics to modern statistics adjusted to European standards and those of international organisations, the head of the Central Bureau of Statistics, Jakov Gelo, said.
A representative of the UN's Statistics Division, Heinrich Bruengger, said the results achieved so far in the adjustment of the statistics system to EU standards were very optimistic.
The system of official statistics was introduced in Croatia on 18 February 1875, when King Franz Josef I confirmed a law on the organisation of offices and councils for statistics in Croatia and Slavonia.
