ZAGREB, Jan 10 (Hina) - At Monday's session of the Social and Economic Council (GSV), social partners supported the World Bank's Pre-accession Economic Programme (PEP) and the Programme Adjustment Loan (PAL) because the programmes should help raise living standards.

Even though the reforms which will be implemented based on the two documents will be painful, they are necessary and will lead to a better standard of living and competitiveness of the national economy, representatives of unions, employers and the government told reporters.

The two documents define the macroeconomic stability and the economic growth, the slowing down of the growth of Croatia's external and public debt, fiscal consolidation, reduction of the unemployment rate, and pension and judicial reforms.

PAL is an instrument supporting Croatia's attempts to join the European Union. It is divided into three parts, of which each is worth EUR150 million, Finance Minister Ivan Suker said.

Social partners decided that after the European Commission sends its opinion about PEP to the government, they would discuss all objections and draw up a three-year programme, Suker said.
