Bosnian court amends indictment against Pasko Ljubicic

SARAJEVO, Dec 25 (Hina) - The Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina has endorsed an amended indictment against Pasko Ljubicic, accused of war crimes which HVO units committed against local Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims) in the areas of Busovaca and Vitez.

According to a press release issued in Sarajevo on Monday, the Court endorsed the amended indictment on 21 December.

The changing of the indictment so that the document could be regulated by Bosnia's laws is a common procedure after the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague refers a case to the local judiciary.

In the case of Ljubicic, who was in hiding in Croatia using a false identity for several years before he turned himself in to the Zagreb police in September 2001, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) has recently decided to refer the trial to Sarajevo, and the indictee was transferred from the Scheveningen detention centre to custody in Sarajevo on 22 September this year.

The amended indictment alleges that Ljubicic was involved in all-out attacks launched by the Croat Defence Council (HVO) units against Bosniak villagers in the central Bosnian areas of Busovaca and Vitez from January to the end of July 1993.

Being at the commander of the military policy of the HVO fourth battalion, Ljubicic exerted control over all members of the military police where the crimes were perpetrated, the document reads.

The indictment holds Ljubicic responsible for the murder of 27 civilians in Busovaca and for arson and plunder of houses and business facilities owned by local Bosniaks.

The indictment also mentions crimes in the villages of Ahmici, Nadioci and Santici where about 100 Bosniaks were killed in the spring 1993.
