Noting that an investigation into the alleged involvement of staff members of the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration in drug smuggling from Bosnia-Herzegovina had been opened in 2002, the statement said that no evidence had been found to corroborate the allegations of drug smuggling and that therefore no charges had been brought against those persons.
In its latest issue, the Croatian weekly Globus cited a Bosnian police report saying that in the period from 2000 to 2004 a driver working at the Croatian Consulate in the northwestern town of Bihac had regularly transported large amounts of narcotics from Bosnia-Herzegovina into Croatia in a car with diplomatic licence plates.
The weekly further said that the Bosnian police had passed the information on to the Croatian Ministry of the Interior in 2003 and 2004, that the Croatian police had investigated the case, but that it "ended up in someone's drawer and was covered up."
