Human Rights Day marked in Zagreb

ZAGREB, Dec 9 (Hina) - The Croatian Government's human rights office on Saturday organised several events, including a concert in Zagreb's central square to commemorate World Human Rights Day (10 December) in memory of the United Nations' adoption of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (also UDHR) on 10 December 1948 in Paris.

In response to reporters'' questions about the situation regarding the protection of human rights in Croatia, the head of the above-mentioned office, Luka Madjeric said it was citizens who could answer that question.

"I can only say what the Government is doing in this field, and it is doing a lot," he said.

According to him, this year the Government was very active in establishing "anti-discriminatory legislation, in efforts to counter corruption, protect disabled citizens and promote principles about gender equality, children's protection, protection of personal data, and in efforts to protect ethnic minorities, refugees and returnees".

These efforts have yielded considerable results, which is corroborated by reports from international organisations, Madjeric added.

Proceeds from the concert in the square will be donated for the rehabilitation of a girl who was in coma after she had been injured in a road accident two years ago.

Present at the event were government officials and representatives of international organisations and nongovernmental organisations.
