President Mesic meets EU Enlargement Commissioner Rehn

ZAGREB, Nov 30 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Thursday held talks with European Union Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn on the rule of law in Croatia and regional cooperation.

President Mesic said at the talks that Croatia was continuing to implement reforms and that today it was a country in which all people were equal before the law and which continued to work towards normalising relations with its neighbours, the Office of the President said in a statement.

Stressing President Mesic's moral authority in Croatia and in the region, the EU Commissioner said that the rule of law and regional cooperation were very important elements of European integration, the statement read.

Rehn was quoted as saying that Croatia's EU membership talks were progressing well and voiced hope that they would continue next year at the same pace, regardless of parliamentary elections scheduled for 2007.

Speaking about the process of the EU's institutional organisation, Rehn said that the process of Croatia's admission ran parallel to that process, and that he saw Croatia as the 28th member of the European Union by the end of the decade.

Mesic and Rehn also discussed the current situation in the region, notably in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia, noting that all countries in the region had European prospects.
