Top Croatian officials comment on newly expanded Jasenovac Memorial Museum

JASENOVAC, Nov 27 (Hina) - President Stjepan Mesic, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader and Sabor Speaker Ivo Sanader were asked on Monday about their impressions after viewing the permanent exhibition of the Memorial Museum and the Education Centre in the Jasenovac Memorial Park, the site of a World War Two Ustasha-run death camp, some 100 kilometres southeast of Zagreb.

Asked if a 15-year-old could learn something after visiting the exhibition, President Mesic said he believed that the exhibition did not sufficiently emphasise the brutality with which the victims were killed. He said that it was good that the victims were given names and that those names were displayed on a screen.

Sabor Speaker Vladimir Seks said he believed the exhibition would contribute to the individualisation of victims.

PM Sanader said that the expanded museum exhibition was the result of work and visits to Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial and the Holocaust Museum in Washington.

I want everybody who visits the exhibition to leave the museum with a strong sense of condemnation of what happened in the camp so that it is not forgotten, Sanader said.

The press also asked President Mesic for a comment on recent accusations against the Croatian army from Bosanska Dubica, Bosanski Novi and Mrkonjic Grad in the Bosnian Serb entity.

"I am not denying anybody the right to protect their interests, including those who accuse Croatia," Mesic said, adding that Croatia had defended itself from aggression.
