Demand for energy is increasing, with a growing services sector taking the lead. This sector requires greater energy consumption to provide high-quality services, he said.
Granic said that Croatia would most probably not be able to avoid construction of a coal-fired thermal power plant and would have to reconsider construction of a nuclear power plant.
Renewable energy sources may also be used, but development of a system using wind power, solar energy and other renewable sources is expensive and the public should know that the introduction of such systems would increase energy prices, he concluded.
Energy experts believe that the Croatian public is not sensitive enough to the energy issue, which makes it hard for the energy community to carry through their projects, particularly those relating to the construction of new facilities such as oil pipelines, a liquefied natural gas terminal and new power plants.
