TIRANA, Nov 24 (Hina) - The prospect of EU membership is the main driving force in the implementation of reforms in the countries of the Central European Initiative (CEI) which have not joined the EU yet, prime ministers and other top officials from 18 CEI member-countries concluded at a summit in Tirana on Friday.

The summit, which was also attended by Prime Minister Ivo Sanader of Croatia, underlined the significant role of the CEI countries which are EU members in helping other countries in the region adopt European standards and values.

It was stated that those countries had made great progress in developing political pluralism and market economy, and that further cooperation was needed in order to accelerate the process of European integration.

PM Sanader said that all speakers at the summit supported Croatia's admission to the EU. He said that Croatia's position was that all countries in the region should be admitted to the EU after meeting the necessary criteria, which he said was a joint position presented at the summit.

Speaking to reporters after the summit, Albanian PM Sali Berisha said that nine of the 18 CEI members would be NATO members next year, which he said was a great encouragement for the other CEI members.

Berisha told reporters that he called on the summit to support UN's chief negotiator for Kosovo Martti Ahtisaari and the Contact Group, stating that it was necessary for peace and stability in the region to define Kosovo's status as soon as possible by respecting the will of the majority to have independent Kosovo and protecting at the same time the rights of the Serb minority and other minorities in Kosovo.

Berisha called on the authorities in Serbia to contribute to settling the issue of Kosovo and to urge Kosovo Serbs to remain in Kosovo. He said that he was confident that Serbs and Albanians could open a new chapter in their relations by building good neighbourly relations and friendly cooperation for the sake of their common future in Europe.

The Tirana summit marked the end of Albania's CEI presidency. Next year the role of CEI chair will be taken over by Bulgaria, which is due to join the EU on January 1.
