Croatian president meets education unions' leaders

ZAGREB, Nov 24 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Friday received the leaders of education trade unions who are striking for the third day.
ZAGREB, Nov 24 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Friday received the leaders of education trade unions who are striking for the third day.

After the meeting held behind closed doors, unionists told reporters that Mesic said he would do all that he could to solve the problem.

The president heard us and understood our problems, he believes that our requests are justified and that the problem needs to be solved, the president of the Independent High School Employees Union, Branimir Mihalinec said.

The president of the Croatian Teachers' Union, Zvonimir Laktasic, said education unions would hold a meeting this evening and try to find a solution.

The Independent Science and Higher Education Employees Union on Friday joined in a strike which began in elementary schools on Wednesday and in secondary schools yesterday.

Education trade unions want the government to compensate over the next several years for the fact that their members' salaries lag behind those in the economy by some 20 per cent.

Unionists said they would continue to strike next week, unless the government makes them an offer.
