Slovene PM comments on ruling by European Court of Human Rights in Ljubljanska Banka case

LJUBLJANA, Nov 6 (Hina) - Slovene Prime Minister Janez Jansa said in Ljubljana on Monday that the ruling by the European Court of Human Rights which turned down a lawsuit filed against Ljubljanska Banka by three clients from Croatia should be studied in greater detail, but that he understood it as a confirmation of Slovenia's position that this was a succession issue.

"More detailed comments on today's ruling by the Strasbourg court will be possible after we receive and study the ruling, but nevertheless we understand it as a confirmation of our arguments. We hope that the ruling will contribute to faster settlement of problems of Ljubljanska Banka clients and we will use that opportunity for positive moves," read a statement issued by Jansa's office.

The statement cites Ljubljana's position that the issue of guarantees for the old foreign exchange savings should be settled within succession talks because it was the former Yugoslav federation that had provided guarantees for savings, and after it declared independence, Slovenia took over only guarantees for savings on its territory.

The statement also said that Slovenia expected talks on the old foreign exchange savings to continue before the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, as envisaged by the agreement on succession to the former federation signed in June 2001 in Vienna.
