The INA oil company remains the biggest Croatian company in terms of overall revenue, followed by the Croatian power company HEP and the Konzum store chain.
Croatian Telecom, T-Mobile Croatia and INA are the biggest companies in terms of profit, while INA, drugs company Pliva and Uljanik shipyard are the biggest exporters.
According to the bulletin, there are 71,803 companies in Croatia, of which 49,408 netted 27.7 billion kuna in total profits, whereas 22,395 companies generated 10.8 billion kuna in total losses.
The total revenues of Croatian companies in 2005 went up 10 per cent from the previous year, amounting to 523.7 billion kuna, while expenditures went up 8.7 per cent to 502 billion kuna.
Gross net profits went up 22.5 per cent, net profits went up 21.6 per cent, while the consolidated financial result went up 61.2 per cent, Zarko Primorac said in his analysis.
Although the growth, when expressed in percentages, is impressive, the total consolidated profit of Croatian companies in 2005 was only 16.8 billion kuna, indicating a rather low profitability, wrote Primorac.
Especially worrying is the fact that 31.5 per cent of companies lost money last year, he said, adding that Croatian companies used assets and capital in an insufficiently efficient way, accounting for the low overall profitability.
