BELGRADE, Oct 30 (Hina) - The Serbian Ministry of the Interior on Monday assumed control of the 260-kilometre state border with Croatia.

Zdravko Ponos, envoy for the Serbian Army Chief-of-Staff, said at a ceremony at Sid near the border with Croatia that by the start of next year the army would transfer to the police control of the border with Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia.

Ponos said that this was in line with European standards, and that there were no more military threats, but only the need to fight organised crime and human trafficking together.

The Croatian Army Chief-of-Staff, General Josip Lucic, said that relations between Croatia and Serbia were improving, a statement that was also confirmed by Croatia's Ambassador to Belgrade, Tonci Stanicic, who said that the two countries were "light years away from the ugly events of the past decade".

Over the last year and during this year the Serbian military transferred to police control of the state border with Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.
