President Mesic says Glavas case must not be politicised

ZAGREB, Oct 27 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic has said that the Glavas case must not be politicised and that he believes that the circumstances of that case will not affect the next elections and Croatia's political image.

"There have been too many reports, analyses and conflicting opinions about this case and what should have been done, and I believe that this is unnecessary because state institutions must be functioning. Whether someone will be remanded in custody or not must not depend on the public or the balance of political forces," Mesic said on Friday in a comment on the case of member of Parliament Branimir Glavas, who was placed in custody on Thursday on suspicion of war crimes.

Speaking during a break in a conference on the management of health systems, Mesic said that efforts should be made to complete the investigation into funds intended for Croatia's defence that went missing.

"When money for Croatia's defence and reconstruction started arriving, Croatia was still part of the Yugoslav federation, and when its independence was recognised, there was no more reason to keep those funds in foreign banks," Mesic said, wondering why the spending of those funds had not been transparent.
