Omerbasic said that construction works were due to begin in spring next year.
The area of the mosque will be some 180 square metres, while the rest of the land bought for this purpose will be used to build an Islamic centre and other necessary facilities. The project amounts to one million euros and is financed by the Muslim faithful from Osijek, the Osijek County and state authorities, and Muslims from around the world.
The mosque in Osijek will be the third in Croatia. The first two are in Zagreb and Gunja. Preparations will soon start to build a mosque in Sisak as well, Omerbasic said.
Osijek Mayor Djapic said he was pleased that there had been no negative reactions in Osijek to the construction of the mosque.
Omerbasic said that the Muslim faithful in Osijek were this year marking the 810th anniversary of their arrival in the region.
There are some 1,000 Muslim believers in Osijek and an additional 5,000 in the entire county.
Djapic condemned Tuesday's attack on a mosque in Mostar, while Omerbasic said that the Muslim faithful were particularly insulted because the attack had occurred during the feast of Ramadan.
