Catholic Church to be given nationalised property back in line with restitution law

SARAJEVO, Oct 5 (Hina) - Bosnia and Herzegovina will return nationalised property to the Catholic Church in accordance with the state law on restitution, which means it will be treated equally as property claimed by other religious communities, the Bosnian Presidency said on Thursday.
SARAJEVO, Oct 5 (Hina) - Bosnia and Herzegovina will return nationalised property to the Catholic Church in accordance with the state law on restitution, which means it will be treated equally as property claimed by other religious communities, the Bosnian Presidency said on Thursday.

The Holy See and Bosnia signed a fundamental agreement regulating, among other things, the restitution of nationalised Church property, on April 19.

One of the agreement's 19 articles envisages the restitution of property within 10 years of the act's going into force, which prompted the Islamic community and the Serb Orthodox Church to complain that the Catholic Church was in a privileged position because they had not signed similar agreements.

The Presidency said an additional protocol was signed on September 29 explaining that restitution deadlines would depend on when this issue was regulated on the state level.

The Catholic Church and the state will set up a commission to establish which real estate should be returned and submit their suggestions to the authorities for approval.
