SARAJEVO, Oct 1 (Hina) - Polls opened in Bosnia-Herzegovina on Sunday for general elections in which voters will choose politicians to lead the nation after the planned end of international supervision next year.

The elections are proceeding without any major difficulties and the situation across the country is clams, the president of Bosnian Central Election Commission, Branko Petric, told the media shortly after 10AM. He said most of the polling stations opened on time, at 7AM, except for two polling station in Livno and Posusje which opened an hour later due to technical difficulties.

This year 2.7 million Bosnians have the right to cast their ballots at 4,299 polling stations that will be opened between 7 and 19.00 hours on Sunday. Thirty six (36) political parties, eight coalitions and 12 independent candidates will run in the elections for the country's collective presidency and the national parliament.

The three-member presidency consists of representatives of the three constituent peoples: Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims), Croats and Serbs.

Six candidates stand in the election for each Bosniak and Croat member of the presidency, while even 11 candidates will compete for the post of the Serb representative.

Voters from the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina will also vote for deputies in the House of Representatives in the Federation Parliament and for representatives in assemblies in ten cantons.

Voters from the Bosnian Serb entity will also directly vote for president and two vice presidents, as well as for representatives to the Republika Srpska parliament.

First preliminary results are expected late on Sunday.
