Coordinators for Danube strategy priority areas named

BRUSSELS, Feb 3 (Hina) - European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn on Thursday named coordinators in priority areas for the implementation of the Danube strategy.

The strategy for the Danube Region, proposed in late 2010, covers eight European Union member states and six other European countries, including Croatia.

"This Strategy will focus on concrete priority action areas, such as the improvement of navigability, water quality, security cooperation and the opportunities for tourism. To realise the Strategy on the ground, Commissioner for Regional Policy, Johannes Hahn has today in Budapest, together with Hungarian Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi, announced which countries and regions will lead priority areas of work," the EC reported today.

Thus, Croatia and the German state of Bavaria, will work on the preservation of "biodiversity, landscapes and the quality of air and soils".

Croatia and the German state of Baden-Wuertemberg will coordinate the work on the support to the competitiveness of enterprises.

There are two coordinators each in 11 priority areas.

The Baltic macro-region was established in June 2009, and the Danube macro-region is expected to be established this June towards the end of Hungary's chairmanship over the EU.
