PRIMOSTEN, Sept 30 (Hina) - Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev said in the Croatian coastal town of Primosten on Saturday it was unacceptable that the United States was resolving problems of the entire world.

"The United States must rely more on international institutions and public opinion and not only on its allies," said Gorbachev, who is celebrating his 75th birthday in Primosten's Zora hotel.

"This means that the United States has become a nondemocratic country. We want a US that embraces partnership as the best solution, the last Soviet president said.

When it comes to terrorism, Gorbachev believes this was not about a conflict of civilisations, but about ever widening gap between the rich and the poor and the fact that billions of people are hungry.

Speaking about the situation in Afghanistan, Gorbachev said that after the retreat of Russian forces from that country during the 1980s, he wanted Afghanistan to be neutral. However, some people didn't trust us, Americans didn't trust us and this lead to the the appearance of the Taliban, Gorbachev said.

Nuclear weapons are one of the biggest threats in the world of today, he said adding that his and the efforts of former US President Roland Reagan to reduce the nuclear arsenal in the world by 50 percent, did not give results.

In the late 20th century, 90 percent of nuclear weapons was owned either by the Soviet Union or the United States, and now over 30 countries posses nuclear weapons, Gorbachev warned.

The former Communist leader said he did not see Russia as part of the European Union, saying that Germany and France would oppose Russia's membership of the bloc. He said that he advocated partner relations with the EU.

He said that the incumbent Russian President Vladimir Putin was a democrat who wanted to carry out democracy his way.
