In the medium term, Croatia will become a very important energy hub, which will increase the security of energy supply not only to Croatia but also to the European Union, Vukelic said at the conference that was held as part of the 82nd Zagreb International Autumn Fair.
The conference brought together about 250 representatives of domestic and foreign institutions, including the European Commission, Euroelectric from Brussels and Energy Control from Vienna.
In Croatia, just like in EU countries, there is a trend of a decreasing share of domestic energy sources. In the past ten years the share of domestic energy sources in Croatia has dropped from about 65 to 50 per cent, the minister said.
Cristobal Burgos of the European Commission cited secure supply, competitiveness and environmental protection as the three main points of energy policy in the future. He gave a brief outline of the so-called Green Paper, the European Commission's strategy for sustainable, competitive and secure energy.
