NOVIGRAD, Sept 20 (Hina) - The northern Croatian Adriatic town of
Novigrad has won the main European award for environmentally-friendly public
lighting for 2006, the head of the Visnjan Observatory, Korado Korlevic,
announced on Wednesday. Korlevic told Hina that 697
environmentally-friendly lamps, three control centres and a power regulator had
been installed as part of a project funded with a World Bank loan that reduced
electricity consumption in the town by 20 per cent.
The system reduces the intensity of the light at night as life in the
town quietens down and traffic subsides, he explained.
Korlevic received the award at a ceremony in the southern English city
of Portsmouth.
