ZAGREB, Sept 15 (Hina) - We have not resumed our fight against corruption due to pressure from the European Union, because there is no such pressure, but for our own sake, because we want to see Croatia as a country where people will

ZAGREB, Sept 15 (Hina) - We have not resumed our fight against
corruption due to pressure from the European Union, because there is no such
pressure, but for our own sake, because we want to see Croatia as a country
where people will not feel helpless because they have to pay bribes to achieve
something, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said in response to criticism from the
leading opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP). We do not need to
respond to criticism from the SDP, because they were in power for four years
and had a chance to show what they are saying today, the prime minister told
reporters during a visit to the AKD agency specialised in high-security
printing.
Commenting on investigations that had been launched into certain
companies on suspicion of financial mismanagement, Sanader said he was not
interfering in the work of competent institutions or in judicial
proceedings.
At a recent meeting of the state leadership, we said that all cases
should be fully investigated and if any wrongdoing is found those responsible
should be brought to justice, the prime minister said. "There can be no
exemptions, because we must finally come to grips with organised crime, bribery
and corruption and all other social evils in Croatia," he stressed.
