The medal, which was presented by UNESCO Deputy Director-General Marcio Barbosa, is awarded to senior officials for their contribution to the promotion of relations between UNESCO and its member states and the organisation's ideas.
Biskupic thanked UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura for the medal, saying among other things that Croatia was intensely cooperating with UNESCO in culture, education and science.
After the ceremony, Biskupic opened the exhibition "Nikola Tesla - the man who lit the world" at at UNESCO headquarters.
The exhibition was staged under the auspices of Croatian President Stjepan Mesic and organised by the Croatian Ministry of Culture, the Croatian Commission for UNESCO, the Croatian Museum of History and the Zagreb Engineering Museum to mark the 150th anniversary of Tesla's birth.
In tribute to the great inventor and scientist, UNESCO has declared this year the Year of Nikola Tesla.
