Switzerland supports Croatia's EU membership aspirations

ZAGREB, Sept 11 (Hina) - Although Switzerland is not a member of the European Union, it supports Croatia's efforts to become a full member of the bloc, Croatian Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks said after meeting his Swiss counterpart Claude Janiak in Zagreb on Monday.

Seks told reporters he had informed his Swiss colleague about "the fundamental issues that currently preoccupy the Croatian public and politics," notably adoption of anti-corruption legislation, judicial reform and the rule of law.

Seks and Janiak exchanged views on the exercise of minority rights and freedoms in Croatia, because "Switzerland, as a multicultural country, is interested in the full implementation of minority rights, just as Croatia is," the Speaker of the Croatian Parliament said.

Janiak was also interested in the progress Croatia had made on the path towards EU membership and in ways of promoting economic ties between Croatia and Switzerland.

Switzerland was present in Croatia during the 1991-1995 Homeland War and in the postwar period, providing humanitarian assistance. Now it wants to concentrate on economic relations, which are very good, and we hope they can be further deepened and intensified in the future, Janiak said.
