ZAGREB/THE HAGUE, Sept 7 (Hina) - A brief status conference in the
case against Croatian generals Ante Gotovina, Ivan Cermak and Mladen Markac
before the Hague tribunal on Thursday was dedicated to technical issues since
the Appeals Chamber is expected to rule on a complaint by defense counsel for
the accused regarding the joinder of the Gotovina case with the Cermak and
Markac case. The first joint status conference in the case to be
held since the decision on the joinder lasted less than half an hour. It was
attended by General Gotovina, while the other two generals had been released
pending trial.
Defence counsel for Gen. Gotovina said that their client had no
complaints regarding prison conditions or his health, while defence counsel for
Markac and Cermak said that their condition was stable and under control.
The three generals are charged with crimes committed during and after
the 1995 combined military and police operation "Storm".
Their defence teams lodged a special appeal against the decision to
join their cases and the forthcoming decision of the Appeals Chamber on that
appeal will determine the future pace of the proceedings.
