Bosnian State Court under political pressure, judges complain

SARAJEVO, Sept 4 (Hina) - Foreign judges of the State Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina have warned they are under strong pressure from domestic politicians trying to influence their work ahead of a forthcoming general election.
SARAJEVO, Sept 4 (Hina) - Foreign judges of the State Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina have warned they are under strong pressure from domestic politicians trying to influence their work ahead of a forthcoming general election.

Judges Manfred Dauster and Finn Lynghjem said in a public statement that was published in Sarajevo on Monday that the ultimate aim of what they described as a political campaign was to abolish the State Court, whose task is to bring to justice war criminals and perpetrators of the most serious forms of organised crime and corruption.

It is impossible not to notice the fact that the court represents a bone in the throats of many politicians. The existence of an independent and impartial state court does not fit into a false picture of reality which certain politicians offer to their voters, the judges said.

As an illustration, the judges cited the recent statement by Bosnian Serb Premier Milorad Dodik that the State Court had turned into "a court for the Serbs".

It is high time such lies and accusations were exposed and dismissed as total nonsense, the judges wrote, expressing hope that ordinary people in the country would be able to see through a hidden political agenda behind the current attacks on the State Court.
