RIJEKA/OSTROVICA, June 26 (Hina) - The start of construction works
on the IIB stage of the Rijeka-Zagreb motorway and the upgrading of its 44.26
kilometre section Kikovica-Stara Susica to dual carriageway standards was
marked at a ceremony in front of the Hrasten tunnel near Ostrovica on Monday,
after which the right tube of the Cardak tunnel was opened to traffic. The construction of the IIB stage of the motorway, whose total value is
estimated at EUR250.6 million, is financed with a loan from the European
Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The
completion of the construction works and the opening to traffic of the two-lane
dual carriageway Rijeka-Zagreb motorway is expected at the end of 2008.
The state secretary for the economy and chairman of the board of the
Rijeka-Zagreb Motorway company, Vladimir Vrankovic, said that the motorway was
important not only for domestic transport and economy, but also for linking
Central Europe with the Adriatic Sea and the northern port of Rijeka.
