The two-hour meeting, held behind closed doors, focused on the restoration of trust between the two religious communities in the area of Zadar and refugee return.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, all participants expressed satisfaction with the talks.
The head of the OSCE Mission, Jorge Fuentes, said that meetings like today's contributed to reconciliation in the area.
Discussed was the reconstruction of churches and accommodation facilities for the clergy, and the possibility of organising lectures for members of the two churches. The talks also addressed the issue of mixed cemeteries and programmes for adolescents and children, Fuentes said.
The Serb Orthodox bishop, Fotije Sladojevic, said that they primarily discussed reconciliation between the Orthodox Serbs and the Roman Catholic Croats. "We all know that a huge tragedy happened in this area but the church is here to heal spiritual and physical wounds, particularly the spiritual ones. We want to revive man's soul through faith. If we are Christians, we should live by the law of reconciliation in love," the bishop said.
Describing the meeting as promising, Member of Parliament Milorad Pupovac said that the Zadar area had suffered great damage in the war and that wounds were still fresh. "I see Zadar as a second Croatian centre according to its potentials. It is our duty to help the city overcome the horrors of war and achieve prosperity," Pupovac said.
He called for settling disputed property-related issues and incidents and for the mutual opening of the two churches to one another's believers.
Archbishop Prendja, who hosted the meeting, said that he was willing to contribute to building coexistence.
"I have always advocated respect for everybody's rights, the reconstruction of houses and churches, Catholic and Orthodox alike. Everybody has the right to leave and return... This meeting was not motivated by political reasons but by reasons of humanity. We want people here to live in the freedom of their beliefs and identities," Prendja said.
Ambassador Fuentes said that the meeting did not address politics or trials before the Hague war crimes tribunal, adding that facing one's political responsibility was positive.
The meeting was organised at the initiative of the OSCE.
