ZAGREB, June 23 (Hina) - The Archbishop of Zagreb, Cardinal Josip Bozanic, on Friday held a sermon on the occasion of Statehood Day, which is observed on June 25.

Bozanic spoke about the importance of respect and promotion of life and urged concrete action in light of data indicating negative demographic trends in recent years.

The cardinal congratulated the state authorities on successes on the road to the European Union, stating that the Church was closely following Croatia's EU membership talks.

The sermon was attended, among others, by President Stjepan Mesic, Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks, and PM Ivo Sanader.

Commenting on Bozanic's criticism of the demographic policy, PM Sanader said that the government would soon present new measures to boost the birth-rate.
