The letter, issued by his office on Thursday, was a reply to an initiative to have the two states close outstanding issues after 15 years, including the most delicate ones, such as the sea border and defunct Ljubljanska Banka's debt to Croatian depositors.
Drnovsek received the initiative recently from Jelko Kacin, president of the Liberal Democrats, the strongest opposition party in parliament.
"I hope the parties in the government will accept your offer for a constructive solution to the complicated problems in relations with Croatia. It is high time we interrupted the current lethargy in our relations with Croatia. I am confident that the citizens of both states want sound and unburdened good neighbourly relations," Drnovsek said in the letter, adding he would endorse the initiative in his capacity as president of state and in dialogue with the Croatian side.
He stated that in order to achieve that, it was necessary to free the issue of relations with Croatia of "media and political pressures which advocate maximalist solutions," which he said would certainly "quickly lead to balanced solutions".
