Independent MP Glavas completes his statement before investigating judge

ZAGREB, June 5 (Hina) - During the second and final part of his hearing before the Zagreb County Court on Monday, independent MP Branimir Glavas dismissed all allegations of the Chief State Prosecutor charging him with war crimes against civilians in Osijek in 1991, claiming that the proceedings against him were rigged and that their purpose was to prevent political changes in Slavonia.

"Regardless of how hard my former friend Vladimir Seks is trying to carry out the orders of his boss Ivo Sanader, denying everything I say, this is about an attempt to settle accounts with me and stop political changes in Slavonia," Glavas told reporters after the five-hour hearing before Judge Zdenko Posavec.

He repeated that he was proud of his role in the Homeland War, that his conscience was clear and that he had no intention of apologising to anyone.

During his first hearing Glavas spoke about command responsibility and the "Vasic case", and today he spoke about the case of Serbian reporter Snezana Beric and other cases of what he described as "the alleged abuse of alleged civilians".

He described the prosecution's allegations as absolutely unacceptable. In the transcript of today's hearing, copies of which were distributed to reporters after the hearing, Glavas said that he would not have allowed soldiers to behave inappropriately because it would harm Croatia's defence and reputation.

Glavas said that he did not want to cover up the crimes which occurred, including the case of civilian Cedomir Vuckovic, but that he sought a police investigation and informed Seks about everything.

Commenting on the other suspect in the case, Krunoslav Fehir, Glavas said that he should have his head examined.

Speaking about DVDs which he distributed to reporters in front of the court building this morning, Glavas said that those were recordings from his own archives, which contained around 2,000 documents and around 100 hours of recorded material.

A Croatian Television recording, which Glavas claimed was made in August 1991, shows the then head of the Osijek Crisis Centre, Vladimir Seks. It is stated in the recording that "all Croatian units in the territory of the city of Osijek will act in line with decisions of the Crisis Centre".

During a parliamentary debate in mid-May, Seks dismissed Glavas's accusations that his case was politically motivated, saying that the ministries of the interior and defence had not been under the jurisdiction of the Crisis Centre and that armed units had not been under his command but under the command of a military commander.

Glavas repeated today that he was satisfied with the professionalism of Judge Posavec and that the way he was being treated was gradually restoring his trust in the Croatian legal system.

At his first, six-hour hearing last week, Glavas dismissed allegations that he was responsible for the killing of civilians and that he had had a private army.

The following day, the other suspect, Krunoslav Fehir, gave a statement before the investigating judge. The former member of the First Osijek Battalion, which was under Glavas's command in 1991, had previously admitted to having shot at a prisoner and testified about Glavas's alleged involvement in crimes against civilians.

Glavas is suspected of being responsible for the torture of three Serb civilians and the murder of two, one of whom disappeared without a trace. In 1991 Glavas was a secretary of the Municipal Secretariat for National Defence and commander of the First Battalion.

After Glavas completes his statement, the investigating judge will decide whether or not to launch an investigation which is requested by the Zagreb County Prosecutor's Office. According to unofficial sources, the investigating judge could make that decision by the end of the week.
