BRIJUNI, May 27 (Hina) - A debate on the financing of political parties, the introduction of rules and standards of political financing, and the abuse of state revenue was held on the Brijuni archipelago on Saturday as part of Transparency International's First European Anti-Corruption Conference.

Stefanija Balog, which led President Stjepan Mesic's campaigns, said his campaign represented, "for Croatia's circumstances, the first integral and completely transparent programme of revenue and expenditure of the financing of a political campaign".

She also said Mesic was the only of the 13 presidential candidates who gave the State Election Commission a full of list of donors to his campaign and the amounts they donated.

Balog said the documents on the total costs showed that most of the money went on radio and television advertising.

The Brijuni event began yesterday with a presentation of Croatia's anti-corruption programme and is scheduled to end tomorrow with the adoption of conclusions. It was attended by some 100 TI representatives from Europe and Central Asia.

The organiser of the event, TI Croatia president Zorislav Antun Petrovic, said the foreign representatives expressed regret that Croatia's anti-corruption programme did not contain harsher measures. He added, however, it was a big step forward that Croatia had adopted such a programme and that the most senior state officials repeatedly announced activities for the adoption of legislation which would suppress corruption.
