SDP deputy says Sabor should renounce sponsorship of Bleiburg commemoration ceremony

ZAGREB, May 25 (Hina) - A Social Democratic Party (SDP) member of the Croatian Parliament proposed on Thursday that the Sabor should renounce sponsorship of the ceremony commemorating executions of Croatian soldiers and civilians by Yugoslav Partisans that took place at Bleiburg, Austria, at the end of the Second World War.

Nenad Stazic said that the Bleiburg tragedy should be marked in an appropriate and dignified manner, protesting at the presence of people wearing Ustasha uniforms at memorial services in the Bleiburg Field.

The Ustashas were a Nazi-style regime that ruled Croatia during the Second World War.

"It is quite inappropriate for the Sabor to be sponsoring an event where people wearing Ustasha uniforms appear," Stazic said, asking his colleagues if they could imagine people in Wermacht uniforms attending anniversaries of the Dresden bombing.

His proposal prompted a number of responses from the benches of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).

It is absolutely unacceptable to insinuate that the Sabor should consider whether it should sponsor (the commemoration of) the Bleiburg victims," HDZ deputy Emil Tomljanovic said, stressing that victims of death marches deserved to be appropriately commemorated by Parliament.
