Berisha made the statement at a meeting with the US envoy for talks on the status of the UN-administered province, Frank Wisner, in Washington on Tuesday. The meeting was held during Berisha's official visit to the United States.
"Talks on Kosovo's status cannot be held indefinitely and the Security Council should adopt, as soon as possible, a special resolution recognising Kosovo's independence," Berisha said, adding that this would be the crown of efforts that were being made by a team of mediators led by former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari.
The UN secretary-general's special envoy for Kosovo, Martti Ahtisaari, said on Tuesday that negotiations on the status of Kosovo were far from over.
During a meeting with Slovene officials in Ljubljana on Tuesday, at which they discussed the Belgrade-Pristina negotiations on Kosovo, Ahtissari said that it was too early to say what Kosovo's final status would be, but added that after it was defined, international troops and structures would remain in the province.
