Slovenia mulling introduction of bank tax

LJUBLJANA, Jan 5 (Hina) - The Slovenian government is not considering a possible increase in the Value Added Tax rate or in the income tax, but it is mulling a possibility of imposing a tax on commercial banks, Slovenian Fiance Minister Franci Krizanic told the national broadcaster

"We are not planning any increase in the VAT or the changes in the income taxation policy, but we are thinking about an idea to introduce a tax on the banks' balance sheet or capital so that we can collect more taxes from those wealthier strata. However this idea needs to be elaborated further," the minister said.

The government intends to reduce budget spending and additionally stabilise the public finance this year amidst the reduced revenues in the state budget, he added.

He announced an attempt to inject fresh capital in the amount of EUR 250 million in the Nova Ljubljanska Banka (NLB) in the first quarter of 2011 in agreement with the Belgian KBC. The Slovenian state is the biggest share-holder in the NLB, and the Belgian bank is the second largest shareholder.
