Meeting on Brodosplit ends inconclusively

ZAGREB, Dec 30 (Hina) - A meeting between officials of the economy ministry and trade unionists working in the Split-based Brodosplit shipbuilding company ended inconclusively, trade union representative Zvonko Segvic said after the talks in Zagreb on Thursday.

Economy Ministry State Secretary Rudjer Friganovic said that the talks had focused on a programme for restructuring that shipyard and added that the trade unions insisted on lifting a ban on concluding new business contracts in the company.

According to Friganovic, the unions' demand could be presented to the European Commission when new business deals appear for conclusion.

The ban on receiving new commissions is in force as long as the European Commission does not okay the restructuring programme.

"We haven't managed to agree, and the trade unions are still considering the possibility of organising a big protest rally for salvaging Brodoslit," Segvic said.

He accused the European Commission of denying Borodsplit workers' the right to work.

The next meeting is likely to be held on 10 January.

Of 3,800 people on the company's payroll, 965 are currently working in the yard, and the others are on holiday, as usual at this time of year.
