ZAGREB, April 12 (Hina) - European Parliament President Josep Borrell Fontelles met representatives of Croatian parliamentary parties on Wednesday to discuss Croatia's integration with the EU, the country's role in the region and regional cooperation, the parliament's public relations office stated.

EP President underlined the importance of a general political consensus in the country on its EU membership.

The Croatian public should be acquainted with the admission process to boost public support, Borrell said.

With regard to regional cooperation, Borrell said that Croatia could consider itself a leader and example to other countries in the region, which he said needed encouragement on their way to European associations.

He stressed that Croatia should not be afraid of being pushed into associations which it does not want to join because its road to the EU was certain and defined. By strengthening regional cooperation Croatia will only confirm its orientation towards Europe and encourage other Balkan countries on the road to the EU, he said.

Neven Mimica, representative of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), said that there was no party in the parliament that would oppose Croatia's admission to the EU and that there was a consensus on the issue as a common national goal.

Luka Bebic, head of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) club of deputies, said that Croatia would respect all the international commitments it had assumed.

Economic cooperation in the region is in Croatia's interest as well as in the interest of its neighbours, but Croatia wants every country to be evaluated according to its own achievements, Bebic said.
