ZAGREB, March 28 (Hina) - Croatian Justice Minister Ana Lovrin met her Austrian counterpart Karin Gastinger in Zagreb on Tuesday for talks on Croatia's progress in judicial reform, regional cooperation, preparations for a ministerial meeting of Stabilisation and Association process countries in Vienna in October, and the Milivoj Asner case.

Lovrin told the press the talks addressed Austria's experience in judicial reform, which Austria is completing, notably the rationalisation of the work of courts, one of the priorities in Croatia's judicial reform.

Lovrin recalled that Austria began the rationalisation in 1976 and halved the number of courts to date.

Reporters asked if the talks addressed the postponed analysis of the adjustment of Croatian legislation on the judiciary and basic human rights to European standards.

Lovrin answered in the negative, saying the Austrian minister understood very well that the topics in Croatia's EU entry negotiations were not rescheduled because Croatia was not ready but strictly due to technical reasons and to give the European Commission and Croatia more time to prepare.

Lovrin said the talks with Gastinger also addressed the case of Milivoj Asner, a former Ustasha official from Pozega in eastern Croatia, who was charged with war crimes against civilians during World War Two and who later fled to Austria.

"Croatia sent the extradition request to Austria in September of last year but we have not received a reply. We have been informed that Austria is in the process of establishing citizenship and a decision has not been made yet whether Asner is an Austrian or a Croatian citizen," said Lovrin.

"Gastinger has promised information about that. Proceedings are under way in both Austria and Croatia, we are just waiting for the decision on citizenship," she added.

The Austrian minister visited Zagreb on a tour of countries in the region covered by the Stabilisation and Association process.
