If the alliance for Europe is broken, it will be because of the Croatian Democratic Union's (HDZ) failure to restructure the economy so that Croatia could prepare in the best possible way for EU membership, Racan said at a news conference of the SDP branches in the city of Karlovac and Karlovac County on Monday.
Croatia's membership in the EU is an undisputed strategic goal, Racan said.
Speaking about the fight against corruption, the SDP leader reiterated that the ruling party lacked the political will to fight corruption. That fight cannot be won in one term, and the HDZ has failed to continue our (anti-corruption) programme, he said.
Corruption and organised crime gained momentum during the HDZ's term in the 1990s, Racan said, adding that his coalition government had set up the Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK), passed a law on the conflict of interest and started the computerisation of land books, but that it had failed to eliminate the said problems.
The HDZ has obviously failed to continue the fight against corruption, favouring with its tax policy the wealthy minority, Racan said.
