The EC postponed until September the screening of the judiciary and human rights, namely the analysis of the adjustment of Croatian legislation regulating those areas to European Union standards.
Speaking to the press, Mesic said one must bear in mind that although the EU entry negotiations were being held in Brussels "it is we here who must implement reforms. Therefore, everything is up to us. The sooner we reform the judiciary, the easier will it be to open other topics with the European negotiators".
Mesic said there was a lot of corruption in Croatia and that the media rarely reported that someone had been punished for corruption. He added Croatia scored very poorly when "others test and rank us in terms of corruption".
"Unfortunately, corruption exists and many foreigners have told me, when I asked them why they were not investing in Croatia, that they want to but are used to transparency which they say Croatia does not have," said the president.
