Cardinal Puljic calls for honouring people's voice in efforts to set up new government

SARAJEVO, Dec 23 (Hina) - Sarajevo Archbishop Cardinal Vinko Puljic has said that the efforts to establish the new government in Bosnia and Herzegovina must respect the fact that different peoples live in that country and that the voice of those peoples must be honoured.

"The fact that citizens of different religions and ethnicity live here must be taken into account and their voice must be respected," the dignitary said in Sarajevo when asked by reporters to comment on conflicts and disputes among political parties in Bosnia over the establishment of the new ruling coalition following the 3 October general elections.

Declining to speak in favour of any political option, Cardinal Puljic said that Bosnia and Herzegovina needed a stable democracy which he said could not be achieved without the respect for the will of each individual people.

He applauded the decision of the Croat-Muslim entity to award an apartment to Emina Smajovic, who so far had held tenancy rights over an apartment within the Sarajevo Archdiocesan Ordinariate.

Smajovic was recently given the right of ownership over a 60-square-metre apartment in the Sarajevo neighbourhood of Grbavica.

Cardinal Puljic thanked all those who showed sympathy with the archdiocese in an attempt to solve that issue fairly.

"The problem was caused by a lack of understanding for the real state of affairs," he said, recalling that the Smajovic family was actually forcibly moved into a part of the Archbishop's Residence on the order of the former Communist rule.

The decision of the federal government put an end to years of litigation in the case which almost resulted in the eviction of Roman Catholic cardinal Puljic from the part of the building where he lives and works.
