Thousand people under investigation for war crimes in Bosnia

SARAJEVO, Dec 3 (Hina) - The Office of the State Prosecutor of Bosnia and Herzegovina is investigating a thousand people on suspicion that they committed war crimes during the country's 1992-1995 war, Chief State Prosecutor Milorad Barisin said on Friday.

He said in an interview with the web weekly "BIRN – Justice Report", which is financed by the European Union, that this referred to suspects under investigation carried out by the State Court and the state prosecution.

"I should note that the number of people reported is much higher than the number of suspects in the ongoing investigations," Barasin said.

The Office of the Chief State Prosecutor has 18 prosecutors conducting war crimes probes and so far it has issued 113 indictments.

According to Barisin, war crimes inquiries are still rather slow as the country's judiciary lacks staff, technical equipment and other resources to speed up the investigations.

He said that he was against parallel investigations which had so far been conducted in other countries in the region in some cases of war crimes.

"We are against investigations into war crimes cases being launched in neighbouring countries when such probes have already been initiated in Bosnia and Herzegovina," Barasin said.
