Lawyer denies any link between Skladgradnja company and former PM Sanader

ZAGREB, Nov 9 (Hina) - A lawyer for the "Skladgradnja" company on Tuesday dismissed media reports that the company's owners, in cahoots with former Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, had syphoned off millions of kuna from the Croatian Motorways (HAC) company.

"Speaking on behalf of the Skladgradnja owners, the Zuzul brothers, and on behalf of the company, I can assert that such media claims are monstrous lies," the lawyer Ante Madunic told Hina today.

The lawyer also denied any contacts between the Skladgradnja owners and the former PM Sanader.

According to Madunic, the only direct deal concluded by the Skladgradnja company and the HAC was about the painting of the tunnels "Sveti Rok" and "Mala Kapela".

This business deal is under investigation. Executives of the HAC public company are suspected of fixing the business deal with Skladgradnja at a price several times higher than the market price. Skladgradnja was contracted by HAC to paint the Sveti Rok and Mala Kapela tunnels and, according to the prosecutors, was paid several times more than the market price for such work. The suspects are accused of defrauding HAC of 22 million kuna.

Madunic said that Skladgradnja was awarded all other jobs pertaining to highway construction not directly from HAC, but as a subcontractor for big construction companies such as IGH, Industrogradnja or Viadukt after they signed deals with HAC.

One of the Zuzul brothers, Slaven Zuzul, is also accused of embezzling 7.5 million kuna when filing a false tax report.

Zuzul is one of the suspects accused of having defrauded the Brodosplit shipyard of HRK 11.5 million. He was arrested in that case in mid-October, but was later released pending further proceedings.
