BELGRADE, Feb 12 (Hina) - Serbian President Boris Tadic has called for promotion of inter-religious tolerance and criticised the setting of national flags on fire as something which could not be treated as the expression of religious feelings.

Tadic was quoted by the Belgrade electronic media on Saturday evening as calling for the respect for others' religion and religious feelings and urging the promotion of tolerance.

Protesters in the southern Serbian town of Novi Pazar where Bosniaks (Muslims) make up a majority of population on Friday staged a rally in protest over the controversial cartoons of Prophet Muhammad initially published by a Danish paper which Muslims worldwide find offensive. During the protest, the Israeli and Danish flags were set on fire as well as a small Croatian flag.

The Islamic community in the Sandzak area has stated that it did not stand behind the Novi Pazar demonstrations.
