ZAGREB, Feb 9 (Hina) - Croatian Justice Minister Vesna Skare-Ozbolt on Thursday signed a request for the extradition of Dragan Vasiljkovic, aka Captain Dragan, from Australia on war crimes charges, the ministry said in a statement.

The request was drawn up in accordance with guidelines provided by Australian judicial authorities so that extradition terms required by Anglo-Saxon law, which Australia applies, could be met.

The request was drawn up before deadline and will be sent to Australia through diplomatic channels, the ministry said.

Vasiljkovic, a former commander of Serb paramilitaries in Croatia and now an Australian citizen, was arrested in Sydney on January 20 on an international warrant issued by Croatia. Croatia was given a 60-day deadline to officially request that he be extradited.

The County Prosecutor's Office in Sibenik charged Vasiljkovic with violating the Geneva Conventions. He is suspected of torturing, mistreating and killing captive Croatian soldiers and police in a prison in Knin in June and July 1991 and in Bruska near Benkovac in February 1993.

He is also charged with devising in Glina in July 1991, in agreement with the commander of a Yugoslav People's Army tank unit, a plan to assault and take over the police station in Glina and several nearby villages. During the attack, civilian buildings were damaged and destroyed, the population was forced to flee, their property was looted, civilians were killed and wounded, including a foreign reporter.

Vasiljkovic dismissed the accusations and said that Croatia's international warrant for his arrest was an attempt by Zagreb to exert pressure on Serbs.
